Secure Your Valuables and Stay Safe on the Road

If you’re heading out in the car for a family holiday, you’re bound to be carrying a lot of equipment. But the way you secure it could be a lifesaver if you run into difficulty on the road.

If you’re heading out in the car for a family holiday, you’re bound to be carrying a lot of equipment. But the way you secure it could be a lifesaver if you run into difficulty on the road. At Thule, we can help you pack the car in a safe and responsible way to make sure you and your family are at less risk when you’re driving.
Who is responsible?
The driver of a vehicle is ultimately responsible for the safety of other passengers and avoiding incidents on the road.  If your next vacation is a road trip, your car is about to become a mobile family room carrying all the gear as well as your family. On long drives, it’s quite easy for your mind to wander around and get distracted.
How you store the items in the car can contribute to this distraction, with every sudden movement on the drive whether caused by something on the road or one of the passengers, items can move around and therefore distract you from the steering wheel and following the road.
Secure packing matters

NSW Compensation Lawyers recently contacted us for our advice on ways to keep families safe on the road. We were happy to contribute to the article, ‘Drive Safe with Your Family’, as we think it’s important that people realise the vital role that loading and securing your items correctly plays in road safety. Here’s what we advise.
Store items safely in the car
All items should be packed into the car in such a way that they can’t move. Moving or rattling items can distract the driver. Any heavy items should be placed low in the seat wells. This minimizes the risk of them becoming projectiles if you need to brake suddenly.
If large items like suitcases or strollers need to be stored in open cargo areas, they should be securely battened down.
Don’t obstruct your vision
Many people pile items up in the back, obscuring the view through the rear windscreen. The driver should have a clear view out of all the windows. This is dangerous as it could block your view of potential hazards, including other cars. It also makes it much harder to judge speeds and distances.
